Solo Singing

 In this section competitors may present works of their own choice. 

Works of a high musical standard is expected; NO “POP” MUSIC, or performances with backtracks will be allowed.  Piano accompaniment is recommended.

The content and difficulty of songs must be suitable for the age of participants.

Maximum time allowed per item:  Gr.0 – Gr. 5: 1½ min, Gr. 6 – 12: 2 min.

Entry Fee for all solo items: R90 per entry.

Vocal Ensemble Items

In this section competitors may present works of their own choice.  Works of a high musical standard is expected.  NB: NO “Pop” music, or performances with backtracks will be allowed. 

Piano accompaniment is recommended.

The content and difficulty of songs must be suitable for the age of participants.

Entry fees are indicated at each item.

Time limit: 2 minutes per item.

Choirs, Vocal Ensembles and other Groups

In this section it is expected that participants present THREE or FOUR works.  The works should represent a variety of styles (tempo, text and atmosphere) The time allowed includes entering and leaving the stage.  School choirs must consist of at least 25 members.  Groups of 5 -25 members enter as Ensembles.

Please also read the General Rules of the Limpopo Eisteddfod as both sets of rules are applicable to this section.

General

  1. In the Vocal Solo section, there will be THREE items per grade/age that may be entered for. The items are Solo Singing in English, Afrikaans and an item where Folk songs may be presented. Competitors may sing works of their own choice, provided that entrants act on the specific assumption that works of good musical standard are presented – NO pop music.
  2. In the Folk Song item, songs must be sung in the ORIGINAL languaGE. NB: With folk songs, TRADITIONAL folk music is intended; no composed works.
  3. Criteria for adjudication will be intonation, diction, breath control, voice production and interpretation.
  4. NO microphones and backtracks will be allowed in this section.
  5. Only original works may be performed, no medleys are allowed.
  6. A participant may not present the same work in two consecutive years.
  7. The same song may not be presented by the same participant in two different sections – e.g. as a solo and a duet. Participants may only perform once in a specific section.
  8. Time limits may not be exceeded – participants may be penalised if this is not complied with.
  9. Copies of works presented must be handed in at the adjudicator’s table. The originals should, however, be available in the room.
  10. Works may be transposed to suit the participant’s vocal range.
  11. All songs must be performed from memory.
  12. In cases where ages or grades are specified for groups the age of the oldest participant will be the determining age for the group;
  13. Dress code: School uniforms are preferred, otherwise participants will be expected to dress according to the formal character of an Eisteddfod. Please take note that inappropriate or indecent clothing is strongly deprecated.
  14. For choral items, a piano and choir benches will be provided. If these need to be moved, participants/organisers will be responsible.  No warm-up facilities are available.
  15. As the tempo of adjudication differs from one person to another, participants and accompanists must be aware that the programme may not always proceed punctually as indicated. The organisers will however, do everything possible to ensure that the planned times are adhered to.
  16. The executive committee may invite any participant in the Eisteddfod to perform at the Gala Concert.

Awards

In the Vocal Solo section, a Special award will be made to a participant who is the winner of a CATEGORY.  To qualify for this award, a participant should enter in all the solo sections.  The participant with the highest average for the THREE sections, will  receive this award.  The category winner will receive a “Special Certificate of Merit”

Categories are determined as follows:

Grades 0–2                 Grades 3-4                  Grades 5-7                  Grades 8-12

In the sections for CHOIRS en ENSEMBLES, a SPECIAL AWARD will be made for the highest marks achieved in each of the sections for Primary School, High School and Open (Adult) choirs, provided that there must  at least be THREE participants in a section. Alternatively, an award may be made to the participant with the highest marks
